Low Budget Orchestra – Innerstellar
Multi-instrumentalist Mikko Muranen is nog steeds niet van plan diep in de buidel te tasten om zijn cd geproduceerd en aan de man te krijgen. Dat kan een gevoelig oor dan ook daadwerkelijk signaleren wanneer je de schijf in de betere audioapparatuur beluistert. Daarentegen schaf je de cd voor het luttele bedrag van € 10,- aan en krijg je hem voor het zelfde bedrag ook nog eens thuisgestuurd, waar dan ook in Europa. Kijk, dan ontstaat bij mij al gelijk een flink portie sympathie, hoewel ik bij de gehele aanpak van Marunen wel wat kanttekeningen plaats. Zo is bijvoorbeeld de site van Low Budget Orchestra bijna net zo kosteloos als de aanpak van de cd. Toch jammer, want je zou wat meer toewijding verwachten van een artiest.
Wouter Bessels had het in de recensie van het tweede album van Muranen al over de gelaagdheid van de toetsen en dat is op dit album niet anders. Die gelaagdheid strekt zich niet alleen tot de toetsen, maar ook de gitaren spelen een grote hoofdrol. De sfeer van de muziek komt dicht in de buurt van space metal met zo hier en daar stevige elementen. Zo is Black Hole Of Your Soul een mooi stevig epistel wat onderhoudend genoeg is zonder zang, vooral door de vele lagen gitaar. Het merendeel van de nummers is overigens van stevige aard en klinkt hier en daar dynamisch, maar de composities vertonen helaas te weinig variëteit. Dat is de grootste zwakte helaas. Het zou maar zo kunnen dat het niet zo zou opvallen wanneer er zang aan de cd gekoppeld zou worden, maar nu neigt de cd een beetje naar een eenheidsworst die hoger op smaak gebracht dient te worden.
Gek genoeg is de muziek van Mikko Muranen ondanks de nodige kanttekeningen goed en onderhoudend, alleen is het allemaal net niet af. Bepaalde elementen gaan toch een beetje jeuken na een paar luisterbeurten. Zo mis ik als liefhebber van de vocale toevoegingen dus een stukje zang, maar ook andere instrumentale en productionele dingen hadden beter gekund. Zo blijft de drumprogrammering een heikel punt, de basgitaar doet aardig mee, maar daar is het ook mee gezegd, de productie is net niet af, het artwork veel te sober en saai. Ik zie maar zo gebeuren dat wanneer Muranen op meerdere vlakken wat expertise in huis haalt de muziek een mooie ‘boost’ kan krijgen. Want hoe netjes en voordelig het ook gebracht wordt, Low Budget Orchestra zal op deze voet nooit echt een respectabele achterban vergaren, ben ik bang.
