Low Budget Orchestra "the second best" (Low Budget Music 2008)
Das ganze große Orchester ist nur deshalb so billig, weil sich schlicht eine einzige Figur dahinter verbirgt: Mikko Muranen. Der Multiinstrumentalist und Komponist hat die 8 Songs seines zweiten Werkes (darum "the second best") selbst geschrieben, arrangiert, eingespielt, aufgezeichnet und produziert. Lediglich den Mix besorgte ein professioneller Studio-Crack in den Monaten Juli bis August 2008 in Helsinki. Cover und Design? Mikko Muranen.
Die acht Songs bringen es auf 40 Minuten. Rein instrumental eingespielt, sind zum Ende eines jeden Tracks kurze Stimmen-Samples angefügt. Die Musik hat mich jedoch so im Griff, dass mir partout nicht aufgeht, was diese englischsprachigen Stimmen sagen.
Die Basis der Songs sind schwebende, in sich bewegte, relativ einförmige Tastenharmonien, auf der die elektrische Gitarre, Keyboards und elektronisches, differenziert und dynamisch programmiertes Schlagzeug ihre vitalen Läufe ausführen. Die Songs sind schöngeistig und kraftvoll, erhaben bombastisch und wuchtig. Was die Gitarre beisteuert, zumeist im Vordergrund solistisch melodische, angenehm harte Soli zelebrierend, ist beeindruckend. Stilistisch würde ich "the second best" im retroinspirierten Symphonic Rock ansiedeln, mit Link zum (alten) Hardrock. Die Songs sind rund und voll, klingen satt. Die Keyboards lassen keine Sekunde ungenutzt, die über die düstere Fläche streichenden Harmonien und die darüber liegenden melodischen Ausflüge haben Charakter und Eleganz. Nur wenige komplexe Schübe gibt es in dem epischen Werk, thematische Brüche gehen mit rhythmischen einher. Der Schlagzeugsound ist etwas nach hinten gemixt worden, hat eine gewisse Unauffälligkeit, kommt aber - in seiner programmierten Klangsprache - gut zur Geltung, macht seinen groovigen Job kantig und ausgefeilt.
Jeder Songs hat ein philosophisches Thema, das die Atmosphäre des Stückes bestimmt. Aber auch ohne diese Themen, die im Digipack unter der CD abgedruckt sind, zu beachten, verliert sich der Eindruck der Musik nicht. Es gibt zuhauf Alben von Sologängern, die weitaus weniger gelungen sind. "the second best" hat Charakter und Klangfarbe, ist von kraftvollem Gitarrespiel und den klangprächtigen Keyboards eindrucksvoll geprägt. Gewiss wird das Album kein Szenehighlight, unbedingte Daseinsberechtigung hat es allemal.
